First, we need to review the verses concerning the creation of Adam. The Qurâan says: Â
“When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed I am going to appoint a viceroy on the earth,’ they said, ‘Will You set in it someone who will cause corruption in it, and shed blood, while we celebrate Your praise and proclaim Your sanctity?’ He said, ‘Indeed I know what you do not know.’ And He taught Adam the Names, all of them; then presented them to the angels and said,’ Tell me the names of these, if you are truthful.’ They said, ‘Immaculate are You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed You are the All-knowing, the All-wise.’ ” (2:30-32) Â
There are many points in these verses which need to be interpreted, but let us focus on some key points:
- Adam is Godâs viceroy on the earth.
- No one even angles can serve as Godâs viceroy except Adam.
- The secret is that Adam is superior to all creation in knowledge.
“Vicegerency of God†is a position which requires great qualifications. And since Adam was the only creature who deserved this position we find out that he was the best creature that God appointed as His vicegerent. So, we can say that God created Adam to be his vicegerent.  Now, we explain briefly these Quranic facts in the light of philosophical views. God as the source of perfection overflows and reveals His perfections. There is a philosophical rule that any perfection will naturally show and unfold itself. You can experience this rule by contemplating on your own perfections; if you have any perfection and qualification, you’d try to show it as much as possible. Therefore, all the creatures are manifestations of Godâs perfection. In other words, all the creatures are the manifestation of Godâs attributes and His superabundant perfection. Human beings are the best creatures who manifest Godâs perfection and attributes in the best way possible, because Adam was the only creature that could understand the realities and thus improve his knowledge. Therefore, according to the philosophical rule we mentioned, Adam was the best manifestation of Godâs perfection, hence he was created to be a mirror of Godâs attributes and was His vicegerent on earth.
